When it comes to containing the sewage and water that comes out of our homes, there are a couple of different options. The first and most common is a septic tank, this is the option most people know about. There are also cesspools that can be used and knowing the difference is the best way to see what is going to work for you.
A septic tank is an enclosed tank that holds the wastewater that comes out of your home. This means water from your bathtubs, showers, toilets, dishwasher, and sinks is deposited into the tank where it is contained. The closed tank holds the waste and the bacteria in the tank digests the waste. The solid waste stays in the tank while the water is slowly leached out into the ground around the tank.
A cesspool is somewhat similar to a septic tank. Although a cesspool is not a closed tank like the septic tank, it is buried under the ground but that is where the similarities end. The cesspool is a perforated pipe or ring that is buried and that receives the waste from inside the home, eventually needing a
cesspool pump. The ring prevents the waste from spreading out very far but it does allow more of the solid waste to stay in one place. This is not a foolproof containment system, but it does help to slow the spread of waste that comes from the home.
According to USA Today, the somewhat antiquated American sewage system handles about 1.26 trillion gallons of untreated sewage each year. While it might seem daunting to get your sewage system upgraded, it is important to take the time to see what type of system will work best for you. The better option really depends on the type of property you have and what it requires. The cesspool is not widely used anymore, and if it is already present you may not be required to update it. Most homes now have either septic or city sewer. Whichever option ends up working for you it's important to have the knowledge to make the correct choice.
